Steve Martin & Martin Short’s DPAC show canceled this weekend. Here’s when they’ll be back
Comedy dynamos Martin Short and Steve Martin were supposed to visit the Durham Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 22 to perform their “The Dukes of Funnytown!” tour to afternoon and evening crowds.
But ticket holders were alerted on Thursday, Feb. 20 that the two shows are now postponed until Saturday, Oct. 18.
“Your February 22 tickets will be honored on this new show date,” DPAC’s website says of the schedule change.
Ticket holders were alerted late Thursday night and early Friday morning, according to emails reviewed by The News & Observer sent by Ticketmaster and Stub Hub, respectively.
Ticketmaster allowed ticket holders to get a refund, if they can’t attend the October show, by Saturday, March 22. Stub Hub told ticket holders they can resell their tickets through the platform.
Here’s why the comedians won’t be coming to Durham this month.
Why are Martin Short & Steve Martin postponing their DPAC show?
“Marty has Covid,” Martin wrote in a Thursday, Feb. 20 Instagram post, captioning a photo of Short and fellow Saturday Night Live alumna Maya Rudolph sharing a playful kiss at the SNL 50th Anniversary Special in mid-February.
“Unfortunately, we have to reschedule this weekend’s sold out Durham and Knoxville dates to 10/17 Knoxville and 10/18 Durham. So sorry for the inconvenience. I think we’ll be funnier then, anyway.”
During the SNL Anniversary Special, “Weekend Update” co-star Colin Jost joked that overcrowding the famous Studio 8H wasn’t a particularly bright idea.
“Health experts are facing increased pressure this winter in the face of outbreaks of COVID, the flu, RSV and norovirus, which they’re calling a quad-demic,” Jost said. “So we did the smart thing and packed every beloved entertainer over 60 into one tiny space.”
Were Short and Martin on SNL together?
Martin, 79, and Short, 74, have been working together since their 1986 film “Three Amigos!” and currently co-star on the hit television show “Only Murders in the Building” alongside Selena Gomez.
In December 1986, Martin and Short co-hosted SNL together along film co-star Chevy Chase. Since then, they have worked together on “Father of the Bride” films and numerous other comedy tours.
That includes “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life,” which came to DPAC in 2017 and is currently streamable as a Netflix special.
Martin Short and Steve Martin’s DPAC show
Here’s what DPAC’s website says of their show:
“’The Dukes of Funnytown!’ is a show that redefines the form in unexpected and profound ways, from two of the funniest, most influential and acclaimed talents of the past century. Their humor is often subversive, but it is always a joyous self-deprecating romp from two comedy masters driven to make each other laugh as much as the audience.
“The jokes come at you at a rapid-fire pace with little set-up and big punch lines as they mock Hollywood and the fickle nature of celebrity, but the comedy truly soars when they lovingly (and relentlessly) roast each other.”
The News & Observer reached out to DPAC for comment on Friday morning but did not hear back by time of publication.
