The two newest Common Markets are getting closer to opening

The owners of Charlotte’s popular Common Market concept are getting closer to opening two new locations – one in South End that will replace the beloved market that closed last summer, and another in Oakhurst near Cotswold.

Construction recently started on the South End location, which is in a 7,000 square-foot warehouse space previously occupied by Carolina Prepress at 235 W. Tremont Ave., according to Graham Worth, the business partner of co-owners Blake Barnes and Chuck Barger who is spearheading the opening of the new markets.

The goal is to open the new South End spot late this summer, he added.

Meanwhile, this week finishing touches are being put on another location, a 6,500 square-foot space at 4420A Monroe Road, in the Oakhurst neighborhood near Cotswold (its OakWold name is a nod to its surrounding neighborhoods).

The OakWold market should be open for business the first week of May, Worth said.

Worth added that management is not actively hiring at either location, but is “always welcoming of new applicants.”

Owners have said the two new markets will have features typical of the other location, including a deli, cafe, beer and wine selection and other retail.

Common Market has another location at 2007 Commonwealth Ave., in Plaza Midwood.

The first South End Common Market closed last July after the site of the store, other businesses and the weekly Food Truck Friday gathering spot was sold for $12.2 million to make way for a new office building that will be the new regional headquarters for an investment firm.
