Red Hot Chili Peppers coming to Charlotte during the band’s first global stadium tour

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, known for songs like “Californication” and “Can’t Stop,” will be coming to Charlotte next September during their 32-city global stadium tour, the American rock band announced Thursday.

The band will perform their “career-spanning” hits and new music from their forthcoming album at Bank of America Stadium on Sept. 1, 2022.

During the band’s last Charlotte show in April 2017, frontman Anthony Kiedis asked bassist Flea if he knew what a Tar Heel was.

“A Tar Heel – correct me if I’m wrong – ” Kiedis said as he looked out into the Spectrum Center crowd, “ – is something that just won’t let go. It sticks to you. Like, it’s just not gonna give up. It’s like tar on your heel. It won’t quit.”

This will be the band’s first stadium tour in the U.S., and marks the return of guitarist and “all around cosmic musician,” John Frusciante.

The Charlotte show will include special guests The Strokes and Thundercat. Other cities on the tour can expect different special guests, including A$AP Rocky, Beck, Anderson .Paak and The Free Nationals, HAIM, St. Vincent or King Princess.

Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, recently hosted a Rolling Stones concert. Country star Garth Brooks previously canceled a Sept. 25 show at the uptown stadium due to COVID-19 concerns.

Billy Joel and Elton John are slated to perform at the stadium next year, along with a rock show featuring Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Poison and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, six-time Grammy Award winners, formed in Los Angeles in 1983 and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

“The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been around, and have not just fallen off the turnip truck, but to a man, they have never been more thrilled, bursting with commitment and purpose, as they are regarding this upcoming tour,” a news release about the tour said. “They have no interest in resting on past accolades, awards or commercial success, this is a mission, they intend to channel the most mighty spirits, and give everything they’ve got.”

The tour kicks off June 4 in Seville, Spain, followed by stops in London, Paris, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. It wraps up Sept. 18 in Arlington, Texas.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. at RedHotChiliPeppers.com.

A fan presale begins Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. in North America.
