  • Juneteenth, a holiday celebrated around the country on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On that day in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas,to take control of the state and ensure all slaves were freed.
