Here’s what’s coming up in Charlotte’s visual arts
What to see
See the 2019 Member Show at McColl Center for Art + Innovation. This non-juried exhibition of work by over 80 McColl Center members and alumni artists-in-residence is on view now through Jan. 4. Visitors will see drawings, paintings, sculpture, mixed media and other works, and all work is available for purchase. The McColl Center gallery is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free admission.
Where to go
On Dec. 20, create your own masterpiece at Paint ’N Sip during Bechtler by Night at either 5:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. A Bechtler teaching artist will lead participants in creating a winter landscape painting. The museum will have free admission from 5-9 p.m. and will be serving Holiday Margaritas at the cash bar, with Seth and Silas Aldridge performing live music in the lobby. See “Filled with Light: Designs of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art” on view in the Second-Floor Gallery, or its newest exhibition, “Celebrating Ten Years: A Bechtler Retrospective” in the Fourth-Floor Gallery. Paint ’N Sip classes are $20 per person, with registration required through the Bechtler website.
What to do
Take a mural tour. Talking Walls Charlotte is a community funded initiative to add murals to blank walls in Charlotte, and this year it increased that number by 15. Artists from Charlotte and around the world painted large scale murals all over the city during the annual fall festival. These artists “enhance the visual appeal of Charlotte’s cityscape by injecting vibrant and thought-provoking murals” according to the Talking Walls website. See Colombian artist Ledania at the Hal Marshall building, British artist PREF at The Spoke Easy or Sharon Dowell at Metropolitan.
