Where to go

Head to Jerald Melberg Gallery to see a new exhibition of pastel and charcoal drawings by Susan Grossman. In “Urban Stories,” the Brooklyn, NY, artist will show the cinematic work she is known for.

Because Grossman draws scenes from her surroundings in Brooklyn and Manhattan, the work has a distinctly urban feel, full of movement but populated with anonymous figures whose faces are rarely shown. It’s on view through March 7.

What to see

Multi-media artist Scott Avett opened a solo exhibition at SOCO Gallery on Jan. 22 titled “In the Light of Unlearning,” on view through March 6.

Apart from being the co-founder of the popular band The Avett Brothers, he has privately worked as a visual artist since earning a BFA in 2000. This exhibition follows the artist’s first solo show at the North Carolina Museum of Art, which opened in the fall of 2019. Avett’s work is figurative and narrative, often depicting family and friends and telling the unique, yet universal, stories of his life as a father, husband and musician.

Who to meet

Get to know Richard Elaver at his opening and artist lecture at Central Piedmont Community College Art Galleries. HIs exhibition “Structure and Void” opens with a reception on Jan. 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., with a 3:30 p.m. artist lecture earlier that day.

Elaver works in the overlapping spheres of art, design and technology, creating digitally fabricated art inspired by nature. The work floats between pure sculpture, jewelry and functional object. Elaver is a designer and metalsmith with an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and is a former Fulbright Fellow. His exhibition is on view through March 12.
