Here’s what’s coming up in Charlotte’s visual arts
Where to go
A new exhibition at Elder Gallery deals with the places that language cannot reach. “In (or for) Perpuity),” opening Feb. 6 from 6-8 p.m., will have work by Carmen Neely and Paul Travis Phillips on view.
The launch pad for this exhibition is the silence that exists in the places and moments where language and words are no longer adequate. Neely is an abstract painter and mixed media artist who was recently an artist-in-residence at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation. Phillips is a conceptual artist whose work often begins with printed texts that are altered and changed.
What to do
The Arts and Science Council will host its 6th annual Connect with Culture Days in which free cultural experiences will take place at various times and locations throughout Mecklenburg County.
On Feb. 8, the Center City Museums will host free admission, the Charlotte Ballet will host story time readings with ballet dancers, and Opera Carolina will present “The Ugly Duckling” as part of its Opera Xpress program.
What to see
Check out the Cabarrus Art Guild’s Annual Spring 2020 Judged Show at ClearWater Arts Center and Studios in Concord. This exhibition opens as the city facility celebrates 100 years of existence and 10 years of being a renovated space.
The exhibition is open to artists residing in Cabarrus and surrounding counties. The opening reception and awards ceremony will take place on Feb. 9 from 2-4 p.m. This exhibition is especially meaningful because in 2020, the Cabarrus Art Guild celebrates 50 years of continuous operation as a nonprofit.
