A man has been arrested and charged with shooting a 6-year-old girl while she played outside a home off Statesville Road on Saturday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
The bullet hit the girl in the leg, and she is expected to survive, police said.
Deontaye Smith, 25, was arrested when he showed up for an unrelated court date Tuesday.
He has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, police said. He was also served warrants for a months-old shooting case and drug charges, police said.
On Saturday, police said it seemed like the girl’s shooter was aiming toward a house on Sunstone Drive. There were other reports of gunfire around the city the same evening, but police have not said those cases are related to this one.
