Troopers: Child dies after she was hit by a truck while waiting for school bus

A 6-year-old South Carolina girl died at a Charlotte hospital after being hit by a truck while waiting for a school bus Friday morning, authorities said.

The girl was taken to Medical University of South Carolina and was later transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, news outlets reported.

The girl died at the hospital early Friday evening, Master Trooper David Jones of the State Highway Patrol told The Charlotte Observer on Saturday.

S.C. Highway Patrol officials said the girl was hit around 6:45 a.m. on Kershaw-Camden Highway.

Lancaster County School District Safety and Transportation Director Bryan Vaughn said the child attended Heath Springs Elementary School. He said she was at the bus stop with her grandmother before she was hit by a vehicle.

Vaughn said counselors from the school district were at the hospital and the school for support.

It’s unclear whether the driver will face any charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
