Charlotte ranks among world’s most ‘underrated’ travel destinations. Here’s why.

Charlotte’s “amazing” food scene, its breweries and international airport helped place the Queen City among the world’s most underrated travel destinations, according to a list of top cities compiled by BuzzFeed.

“27 Underrated Places That Belong On Your Bucket List,” Friday’s BuzzFeed headline read. Charlotte ranked 20th.

BuzzFeed included a picture of the uptown Charlotte skyline taken from what appears to be a high-rise apartment patio.

Last year, Charlotte was listed as one of the top 25 cities to live in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report.

What makes Charlotte attractive to travelers? Botanical gardens and ghost tours, according to BuzzFeed. Meanwhile, the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority also recommends the city’s music, theater and museum offerings if you’ve got just 48 hours to see the sights. (Charlotte has brewery tours, too).

The BuzzFeed list says Charlotte is “one US city that offers it all.”

And the “ton of flights” connecting through Charlotte Douglas International Airport mean “you can easily take a (sneaky) day trip whilst on your way somewhere else,” according to BuzzFeed. Major renovations have added to the airport’s atmosphere recently including a new 51,000-square foot “plaza” that includes restaurants and Wicked Weed Brewing. Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and NoDa breweries also have locations at the airport.

BuzzFeed’s list placed Charlotte among international destinations that include Agadir, Morocco; Tbilisi, Georgia; Alexandria, Egypt; Montevideo, Uruguay; and Hoi An, Vietnam.

Other U.S. cities on the list are Columbus, Ohio; Anchorage, Alaska; Salt Lake City, Utah; St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Rapid City, S.D.
