Swing into Summer

There's plenty of options around Charlotte for kids to learn, let loose and have fun at summer camp.

Most kids don’t spend their summers learning to be a chef, but some can in Charlotte this year. At Flour Power Kids Cooking Studios, children can learn cooking skills while making their own snacks and meals from scratch.

The camp provides real, hands-on experience of making home-cooked meals. Each day, kids at the summer camp will make two snacks and lunch. When they’re not cooking, they also get to play outside and participate in kitchen science experiments with guest speakers.

“They’re always so creative, it’s so fun to see what they come up with,” said instructor Grace Campbell. “It’s just really fun seeing how they look to cooking and take it in their own way.”

Campbell and the other instructors work alongside the campers to go through each recipe step by step, while also teaching them about every ingredient and kitchen tool used in the process.

The studio is designed just like a professional kitchen. Flour Power has two cooking areas that are fully equipped with stoves, ovens and gadgets, plus all ingredients needed for each meal. From homemade pizza and pasta to cupcakes and soft pretzels, there’s a wide variety of food that campers get to make from scratch during the weekly sessions.

The studio has been offering summer camps since 2018. Every session has a theme, like “Create your Kitchen” where campers get to create their own restaurant and menu ideas.

At the end of each week, kids also get to take home a booklet at the end of the week of recipes made during camp.
