‘Multiple dead bugs’ found at Charlotte restaurant: Sanitation scores (April 4)

A north Charlotte restaurant received a “B” grade from the Mecklenburg County Health Department for numerous health violations, including the presence of insects and improper food storage.

▪ AMF University Lanes (5900 N. Tryon St.) in Charlotte received a score of 83.5% during an inspection on Wednesday, April 2.

Inspectors cited the restaurant after finding “multiple dead bugs throughout the facility,” county documents show.

Other violations the restaurant was cited for include:

  • Food dumped in handwashing sink

  • Cheese in cold holding above required temperature

  • Employee preparing food with no head covering

  • Kitchen equipment in need of repair

  • Food debris inside microwave and pizza oven

  • Large amount of debris and grease buildup on floors

This is the restaurant’s first “B” grade.

Mecklenburg County sanitation scores

The Mecklenburg County sanitation grades database shows that at least 158 restaurant inspections were completed March 28-April 3.

▪ Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

▪ Four restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Biryani Nation (14027 Conlan Cir.) received a score of 87.5% during an inspection on Thursday, April 3.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 13 standards, including an employee preparing food with jewelry on and food debris on kitchen equipment.

  • Most violations were corrected during the inspection

  • The restaurant previously scored 90.5% in November 2024.

▪ Zodiac Bar and Grill (200 W. Woodlawn Rd.) received a score of 87.5% during an inspection on Thursday, April 3.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 12 standards, including raw meat stored above ready-to-eat chicken breast and shelving inside walk-in cooler in need of cleaning.

  • Most violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 92.5% in November 2024.

▪ West End Tavern (2817 Rozzelles Ferry Rd.) received a score of 87.5% during an inspection on Friday, March 28.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 11 standards, including food stored on the floor and a broken dish machine.

  • Most violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 87% in February 2025.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

According to state law, permits are immediately revoked if a restaurant receives a score of less than 70%.
