Farmer Dean Mullis is accustomed to seeing black snakes slithering about his Richfield farm an hour northeast of Charlotte.
But even he was taken aback the other day when he walked into his barn and saw three writhing atop his workbench. Luckily, he had the presence of mind to record a minute of video with his cell phone as they climbed their way up his pegboard tool organizer. Warning: Non-snake fans may find it creepy. But if you marvel at the ability of all creatures, you’ll want to watch.
“They like to hang out in the barn loft,” said Mullis, whose newsletter is often excerpted in the Observer. “They just kind of use the barn as their base.” At the moment, he added. “There’s at least five different blacksnakes hanging around.”
For the most part, he said, “We don’t mind them because they keep the rodents down.”
