Power restored to 11,000 Charlotte-area residents after fire at Duke Energy substation
A fire at a Duke Energy electrical substation in Matthews left more than 11,000 customers without power Friday morning, officials said.
Up to 11,712 residents reported power outages in the area, according to the Duke Energy outage map. Power was restored by 11 a.m., the map shows.
A portable piece of equipment being used as a part of maintenance at the power station caught fire, Queen City News reported. The fire was extinguished by 9:30 a.m., the news station reported.
The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.
Duke Energy switched over affected homes and businesses to another substation to restore power, the company said.
Due to the fire, East John Street is closed from I-485 to Stallings Road, Matthews police said in a tweet at 8 a.m. Friday. Matthews Fire and EMS is also at the station, according to the tweet.
Traffic signals at a number of intersections stopped operating due to the outages, but they have since been restored, police said in a tweet at 12:35 p.m.
