A study suggests NC isn’t among the best states for millennials. This is what was found
A recent study ranked North Carolina as the 28th best state to live in for millennials.
According to a WalletHub report, millennials in 2022 are currently the largest generation and are responsible for 21% of all consumer discretionary spending in the country. But due to the Great Recession and lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, many millennials are economically worse off than their parents, the report says.
To determine the most livable places for people born between 1981 and 1996, the personal finance site compared all 50 states across five categories: affordability, education and health, quality of life, economic health and civic engagement.
Though North Carolina ranked 17th in the country for affordability, it placed 29th in education and health. The state ranked 33rd in quality of life, according to WalletHub.
Affordability scores for each state were based on metrics like the average monthly earnings, housing costs, and homeownership rates.
To calculate the education and health score, WalletHub examined factors ranging from the share of millennials in each state who were high school graduates to those who do not have a primary care doctor.
The quality of life rankings was based on previous studies conducted by WalletHub, which rated North Carolina as the 19th best state for singles and the 37th best state to raise a family.
Washington state was listed No. 1 followed by the District of Columbia and Massachusetts. Among North Carolina’s neighbors, Virginia was the only one ranked in the top 10 while Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina were ranked 30th or lower.
