The mix of snow and rain forecast for Friday has shifted northwest of the Mecklenburg County area, sparing Charlotte motorists a rough morning commute, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain chances have been elevated to 100%, with a high of only 40 degrees on Friday, forecasters say.

The low Thursday night will be above freezing at 35 degrees, indicating little chance of hazardous travel conditions Friday morning.

Rain is expected to continue through the day, with a 60% chance after sunset Friday and a 30% chance after midnight, forecasters say. The low Friday night will be 34 degrees.

The rain-snow mix is expected to stay “near and north” of Interstate 40, and it will change to just rain by noon, forecasters say.

“Friday should be an exceptionally cold day with the eastern NC foothills and I-40 corridor not likely making it out of the 30s,” the NWS reports.

Hazardous conditions are possible Friday in the foothills and mountains, where sleet and freezing rain are included in the forecast.
