High Point police ask for public's help in fatal hit-and-run crash that killed 5-year-old boy
High Point police are asking for the public's help to identify the driver and vehicle involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 5-year-old boy.
Shortly before 5 p.m. Friday, High Point 911 received a call about someone lying in the road near the intersection of East Russell Avenue and Hines Street, police said.
First responders went to the scene, and they found a 5-year-old boy who had been hit by a car, police said.
The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, police said. Police didn't identify the victim.
The driver left the scene, but investigators believe the suspect's vehicle is a gray Ford Focus or Ford Fiesta, possibly from model years 2012-2018, police said.
Anyone with information about this case can call High Point police at 336-883-3224 or Crime Stoppers of High Point at 336-889-4000.
"This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has forever changed the lives of a family and impacted our community," Police Chief Curtis Cheeks III said in a statement.
"A five-year-old child lost his life, and the person responsible made the decision to leave the scene rather than stop and help," Cheeks said.
"To the driver involved, I am asking you to do the right thing," Cheeks said. "Accidents happen, but the choices we make afterward define our character."
Police investigators will pursue leads and use "every available resource to identify those responsible," Cheeks said.
"However, there is still an opportunity for the driver to come forward and take responsibility for their actions," Cheeks said.
