Blue Line extension keeps drawing interest, with hundreds of new apartments planned
A developer is planning to build hundreds of new apartments along a busy stretch of North Davidson Street near the path of the Blue Line extension, according to recently filed planning documents.
Atlanta-based Wood Partners, which is already building hundreds of new apartments at 25th and Brevard streets, is targeting a site between Belmont Avenue, North Davidson, Caldwell and Thirteenth streets for its newest development. Called “Alta Purl II,” the new apartments would be built on 3.2 acres.
The site is mostly vacant or occupied with truck and junkyard parking. Charlotte City Council approved rezoning plans filed last year to change the site’s use from industrial to transit-oriented development.
Although it’s mostly empty, the site is across from Birdsong Brewing, a popular spot, and two blocks from the Blue Line light rail that’s set to open by March 2018. The site is also a block away from the Tompkins Hall project, an ongoing renovation and redevelopment of a former textile mill into a food court, shops and creative office space.
The apartments would total up to 310 units, according to preliminary plans, with almost 500 parking spaces.
The Wood Partners project at 25th and Brevard streets broke ground earlier this year, and the developer expects to complete it in early 2019. Elsewhere in Charlotte, the company has also developed apartments in Steele Creek, Prosperity Village and Wesley Village, near uptown.
