GM to open a racing tech facility near Charlotte speedway. Here’s what we know
General Motors is opening a performance and racing technical center near Charlotte Motor Speedway, the company announced Thursday.
The 75,000-square-foot tech center will be less than 10 miles from the Concord track, the auto company said in a statement.
General Motors didn’t announce how many jobs the facility would bring to the area.
Cabarrus County property records show General Motors purchased nearly 20 acres at 4540 Fortune Ave. NW for $10.95 million in December.
The facility will have vehicle and “Driver-in-the-Loop” simulations to improve racing capabilities. The tech center is expected to open by mid-2020.
GM sells vehicles under the Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Holden, Baojun and Wuling brands.
“Chevrolet and Cadillac Racing are two of the winningest brands in motorsports,” Chevrolet U.S. Vice President of performance and motorsports Jim Campbell said in the statement. “This new facility will build upon their legacies and hopefully lead to even more success on the track.”
