Plans move forward for new $200 million hospital near Charlotte. Here’s what we know
CaroMont Health is one step closer to opening a second hospital in the Charlotte area.
The Gaston County health care system announced Wednesday that the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services approved its request to open a hospital in Belmont near N.C. Highway 273 and Interstate-85.
The state approved a $195.8 million project that will include an emergency department, operating rooms, a labor and delivery unit, imaging services, 54 acute care beds and 12 observation beds.
CaroMont announced plans for its second hospital in May. The Belmont hospital is part of the health care system’s $300 million in investments in and around Gaston County, according to CaroMont.
Construction could start in the summer of 2021, according to CaroMont. The Belmont hospital is scheduled to open in 2023.
CaroMont is also planning to open a four-floor, 78-room tower at CaroMont Regional Medical Center.
In its approval, the Health and Human Services Department projected the new hospital would have more than 12,000 emergency services patients in its first year of operation.
Other hospital plans
The Charlotte area’s largest hospital systems are still competing for the North Carolina department’s approval. Novant Health and Atrium Health have both applied for approval to add new beds and operating rooms in Mecklenburg County.
The state will approve six new operating rooms and 76 new acute care beds in Mecklenburg County requested in 2019, according to the 2019 State Medical Facilities Plan.
Atrium has requested six new operating rooms and 76 acute care beds, and Novant has requested 1 operating room and 20 new acute care beds.
