Patient data stolen from prominent Charlotte medical services provider, firm says
A prominent Charlotte medical services provider experienced a recent weeklong data breach in which some patient information was stolen, “including a very limited number of patients’ Social Security numbers,” company officials said Friday.
In a statement, Charlotte Radiology officials said they found no evidence of “fraud or misuse” as a result of the theft and are notifying each patient whose information was taken during the Dec. 17-24 breach.
The statement did not say how many people were affected.
On Dec. 24, the company “identified a security incident that impacted systems that contained our patient information,” according to the statement.
“We immediately initiated our incident response process, notified law enforcement, and began an investigation with the assistance of a forensic firm,” officials said. “Within days, we were able to quickly contain the incident and resume serving patients.”
The investigation revealed that “an unauthorized party gained access to our network and took copies of some of the documents on our system,” according to the statement.
The documents included such patient information as their “name, address, date of birth, health insurance information, medical record number, patient account number, physician name, date(s) of service, diagnosis and/or treatment information related to radiology services,” Charlotte Radiology said.
For patients whose Social Security numbers were exposed, the company is offering free credit monitoring.
Charlotte Radiology also established a dedicated call center to answer questions about the incident. Call 1-855-604-1852, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays.
“Charlotte Radiology takes seriously the confidentiality and security of our patients’ information,” according to the company statement. “We continue to implement enhancements to information security, systems, and monitoring capabilities, and are committed to providing the best care for our patients.”
