Construction work could start this month on 18 miles of roads throughout Mecklenburg County, including busy stretches of Brookshire Boulevard and N.C. 73, in a $6.1 million road improvement project.

The state Department of Transportation announced the new contract Thursday, bringing improvements to Mecklenburg County roads, including milling, resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction.

Those roads include parts of N.C. 16 (Brookshire Boulevard) between Fred D. Alexander Boulevard and Lawton Road, and N.C. 73 between W. Catawba Avenue and Interstate 77.

Other sections of Mecklenburg roads will also see improvements, including Runnymede Lane/Woodlawn Road between Sharon Road and Park Road, Westinghouse Boulevard between N.C. 49 (S. Tryon Street and Granite Street), and Caldwell Road between Back Creek Church Road and the Cabarrus County Line.

The construction work could start as soon as April 26 and is expected to be completed by November 2023.

The construction announcement did not immediately specify what lane or road closures may be involved in the road improvement projects.

Some roads, like high volume roads N.C. 16 and 73, only permit lane closures at night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., NC Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer Thompson told the Observer.

And work is not permitted on holidays, including Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and others, she added.
