UPS facility in west Charlotte cutting dozens of jobs. Here’s what happened

Dozens of UPS workers in Charlotte are losing their jobs as night sort operations close at a west Charlotte facility.

The layoff of 75 employees assigned at UPS’ West Charlotte Night Sort at 1815 W. Pointe Drive is “due to volume loss in our network” causing a lack of available work, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) filed March 22 with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The night sort jobs at the hub are effective May 24, UPS said in a statement to The Charlotte Observer on Friday. “We often evaluate our operations and flex our network to meet volume demands,” UPS said in the statement.

UPS said the closing affects 60 part-time hourly employees, 10 part-time management employees and 5 full-time management employees. Affected employees will be offered other positions if they become available, UPS said.

We will work with those who may be impacted throughout the process to provide support,” UPS said in its statement.

UPS is one of the world’s largest companies with 2023 revenue of $91.0 billion and about 500,000 employees, according to the company’s website.

Two Atlanta-based packaging companies recently closed in the Charlotte area.

Last month, Graphic Packaging International closed its plant at 800 Westinghouse Blvd., resulting in 112 layoffs.

In December, Hood Container cut 88 jobs at its 11135 Monroe Road, Matthews, when it closed the design center and corrugator plant.
