Why Atrium is extending its hours to treat Charlotte-area kids on nights and weekends

Parents with sick kids in the Charlotte region now have a new option to see a doctor after working 9-to-5 jobs or during the weekend.

Atrium Health Levine Children’s Pediatric Extended Care will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the hospital system announced Wednesday. The primary care service is available at 9625 Northcross Center Court, Suite 201B, Huntersville.

Working beyond traditional office hours for children is a first for the region, according to Atrium Health Levine Children’s. Its Huntersville location addresses a critical gap in pediatric care for families in Huntersville, Lake Norman and surrounding areas, according to the health care system.

Atrium is planning to add more pediatric extended care locations in the Charlotte area.

The health care system recognizes that families face challenges that make it hard to get their kids to the doctor during the week, said Callie Dobbins, Levine Children’s senior vice president, in a news release. She said the extended hours is a first-of-its-kind option for the region.

A variety of services are available through in-person and virtual appointments, according to Atrium.

The services include: newborn care and well-child visits; sick visits for minor illnesses; vaccines, including COVID and flu; developmental, hearing and vision screenings; school, sports and camp physicals; minor injury treatment; diet and nutrition guidance; laboratory services; and breastfeeding assistance.

Atrium continues to expand care

In September, Atrium Health opened its first urgent care center for bone, joint and muscle injuries in the Charlotte region.

Walk-in care is available seven days a week at the Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute clinic, 3030 Randolph Road, Charlotte.
