Amazon expanding in Cabarrus County, adding 100 jobs to a site that will be open 24/7

Internet retail giant Amazon is opening another facility in Kannapolis with plans for 100 new jobs at a site that will operate 24/7, the city announced on Thursday.

The 200,000-square-foot site will be a same-day delivery warehouse with the capacity to deliver items to customers within five hours of placing an order. It’s at the 85 Exchange Industrial Park near Amazon’s distribution center at the intersection of Kannapolis Parkway and N.C. 73.

The cost of the project was not immediately available.

The new center at 6255 Shumard St. will be a hybrid fulfillment and delivery station.

Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant welcomed Amazon’s expansion, saying the city has worked hard to encourage businesses opportunities for companies of all size.

“We look forward to our continued positive relationship with Amazon,” the mayor said in a statement.

Amazon’s same-day delivery site in Kannapolis allows workers to fulfill, sort and deliver orders in one location to speed up delivery to customers.

“We’re proud to be expanding our operations footprint across the state through collaborative partnerships and our continued commitment to economic growth,” Amazon Economic Development Manager Sam Blatt said in a statement.

Amazon is a main tenant for the 85 Exchange Industrial Park that was developed by Trinity Capital Advisors, according to industrial partner Jordan Quinn. The park is planning to add 1 million square feet of space to bring more jobs to the area, Quinn said in a statement.

Amazon’s growth continues in Charlotte area

The Thursday announcement is the latest expansion plans in the Charlotte region for the Seattle-based company.

Amazon’s first robotics fulfillment center in North Carolina came to Charlotte in 2019 to ship small items like books, electronics, household items and toys.

Kannapolis is also home to a 1-million-square-foot fulfillment center.

In 2021, Amazon announced plans to open several new facilities. That included a fulfillment center in Pineville for large items such as mattresses and exercise equipment.
