Novant Health opens new $170 million expansion at medical center in Matthews
Novant Health expanded services at its hospital in Matthews with the opening of a $170-million, four-story tower for critical care.
The new 150,000-square-foot project for Matthews Medical Center adds 20 more bed spaces — bringing the total to 177. Novant celebrated the site on Friday with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1500 Matthews Township Parkway.
The purpose of the expansion is to help meet the needs of Matthews’ growing community, according to Novant. It includes expanded surgical and heart/vascular services. Novant added a new intensive care unit.
Zack Landry, president and chief operating officer, said the new space has the latest technology for workers to deliver care.
“This beautiful, state-of-the-art space is meant to be a sanctuary of healing, and our expert care teams take that responsibility seriously,” Landry said.
Novant’s new tower has 24 private patient rooms in the medical/surgical unit. The rooms have smart room technology for education and communication between patients and workers. Surgical services include seven operating rooms, three procedure rooms, a post-anesthesia care unit and an ambulatory care unit.
Other additions include more MRI equipment; new cardiovascular suites; and a new intensive care unit expanding from 10 to 16 beds for the sickest patients to receive special care.
The medical/surgical unit will open in early February and the new ICU will open in summer. Novant’s Matthews center opened 30 years ago with promises to grow and adapt to the community, Landry said.
