Popular Charlotte jeweler ends 70-year run. A Raleigh company looking to expand bought it

Raleigh-based Bailey’s Fine Jewelry expanded its footprint in North Carolina after buying Morrison Smith Jewelers, a popular Charlotte jeweler that has been in business for 70 years, a company representative announced Monday.

Morrison Smith Jewelers at 705 Providence Road, is working with Bailey’s during the transition. The families had a relationship spanning decades even before the purchase.

The sales price in the deal was not disclosed.

Charles Smith, father of former Morrison Smith president Chuck Smith, was a mentor to Clyde Bailey, father of president and third-generation Bailey’s owner, Trey Bailey.

Smith said the decision to sell was not taken lightly.

“It was extremely important to us that we found a company that aligned with our family values and dedication to exceptional customer service,” Smith stated. “The parallels between Morrison Smith and Bailey’s are numerous and we knew it would be a great fit for everyone.”

“(Morrison Smith) is such a well-respected and well-run business,” Bailey said, “and we look forward to continuing that legacy while bringing the Bailey’s experience to Charlotte.”

Bailey’s will continue to offer Morrison Smith’s repair and custom design services and sell jewelry. A wider selection of diamonds, engagement rings and expanded designer options will be offered.
