Budget airline details plans to cut Concord routes soon after announcing them

Concord-Padgett Regional Airport is losing several nonstop flight routes, including two that never officially took off.

Avelo Airlines is canceling six routes at the end of April from the regional facility, according to spokeswoman Courtney Goff.

The budget airline will no longer fly from Concord to Nashville International Airport in Tennessee; Daytona Beach International Airport in Florida; Albany International Airport in New York; and Lakeland Linder International Airport in Florida.

The airline is also no longer moving forward with flights to Washington Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. Both routes were announced in March and were set to start in May.

The cancellations are due to “poor performance,” Goff said. She added that the flights also weren’t booking in a “normal pattern.”

With these cancellations, Avelo will continue to fly to these locations from Concord:

  • Tweed New Haven Airport in Connecticut
  • Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in New Hampshire
  • Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport in New York

The airline will be moving forward with flights to Long Island MacArthur Airport in New York starting May 22. That route was also announced in March.

The Charlotte Business Journal was first to report on the latest changes.

Avelo anniversary in Concord

The end of the routes for the Houston-based low-cost carrier comes as it nears its one-year anniversary flying out of Concord. It became the third airline to fly out of Cabarrus County in May 2024.

At the time, Trevor Yealy, head of commercial development for Avelo, said the airline wanted to take advantage of the Concord airport, noting it is smaller than Charlotte Douglas International Airport and parking is more convenient.

Since starting service last year, Avelo has flown more than 65,000 customers on more than 550 flights from the airport.

But it seems the airline has struggled to find its footings.

The flights to Daytona and Nashville were just launched this month on April 3 and 4, respectively, while the flights to Lakeland and Albany began last year.

In February, Avelo also canceled routes from Concord to Wilmington, Delaware, and Bradley International Airport in Connecticut.

While Avelo didn’t comment on whether the airline is struggling, Goff said it will continue “to base aircraft and crewmembers in Concord.”

In March, the airline opened its newest base of operations at the airport, with plans to add 50 new jobs. It also planned to have two Boeing 737 aircraft in Concord.
