Tepper Sports proposes 4,400-seat indoor music venue near Bank of America Stadium

Charlotte City Council will consider a new music venue on an undeveloped plot next to the Bank of America Stadium.

Tepper Sports and Entertainment is proposing a 4,400-seat indoor facility that city officials say would fill a void in the city’s performance venue landscape. The project would not require public money for construction or operation, according to a presentation to the jobs and economic development committee of City Council on Monday.

A cost estimate for the project near the Panthers stadium was not immediately available. Tepper Sports and Entertainment and the Panthers are owned by billionaire David Tepper.

The proposed venue would host an estimated 80 to 100 shows per year on two stadium-adjacent acres that are already being leased. Tepper Sports hasn’t finalized a design plan, Deputy City Manager Shawn Heath said.

Heath said the city lacks mid-range venue options that can accommodate between 2,500 and 8,500 people. The Fillmore has a capacity around 1,800, Ovens Auditorium can hold 2,500 and Bojangles Coliseum holds up to about 8,500 people, Heath said.

The committee unanimously voted to submit the recommendation to the full council for approval. Council will discuss the issue next Monday, Oct. 13.

Uptown district development

The Tepper proposal is just the latest in a spate of development in and around uptown Charlotte.

About $1.7 billion worth of investments is transforming aging spaces in the city’s uptown, midtown and South End areas that will turn a business-centric district into a destination district, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.

Those projects will bring about 7,110 apartments, 2.2 million feet of office space, 338,800 square feet of retail and 1,630 hotel rooms to the downtown districts in the coming years.

Among the area developments are the Iron District, The Pearl and North Tryon Tech Hub.

Part of the investment includes upgrades at Bank of America Stadium and the Spectrum Center.

In June 2024, the city approved Tepper Sports & Entertainment’s request for $650 million for Bank of America Stadium improvements and to help fund a new field house. Tepper Sports agreed to keep both the Panthers and Carolina FC in Charlotte for at least 20 years. The stadium opened in 1996.
