Another company is leaving Charlotte for South Carolina, and this latest move will impact 172 employees.
Techtronic Industries Co. announced Wednesday that it would be relocating its operation from University City to Anderson, South Carolina, according to a news release from Anderson County.
Techtronic’s University City site at 8405 IBM Drive is where the global manufacturer hosts its North American floor care and cleaning appliance business, TTI Floor Care North America. There, TTI Floorcare produces appliances for Hoover, Oreck and Dirt Devil.
The company will move on June 1, 2026.
It’s unclear how many people will be laid off. A portion of TTI’s 172 employees may move with the company to Anderson, according to a Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification filed with the state of North Carolina.
But TTI told the N.C. Department of Commerce that some positions would be eliminated after the move. Layoffs will begin Jan. 9 and continue until the move date.
Techtronic isn’t a stranger to South Carolina. It has a global innovation center in Anderson that includes office space, an engineering and testing site and a distribution and warehouse center, according to the release. Anderson is about 130 miles south of Charlotte.
Since 2019, Techtronic has invested more than $500 million in South Carolina and employs more than 1,500 people.
The move was initially discussed earlier this year with Anderson County as part of an expansion plan for Techtronic. On Tuesday, the Anderson County Council extended tax incentives for Techtronic propelling the move forward, as reported by The Anderson Observer.
It’s unclear how much tax incentives Techtronic has received.
Techtronic’s headquarters is in Hong Kong but it has locations all over the U.S. and internationally. It employees over 47,000 people and has reported over $7.8 billion in sales as of August, according to its website.
TTI Floor Care’s time in the University area
In 2015, TTI announced that it would be investing $5 million on a “center of excellence for marketing and innovation” in the University area.
At the time, TTI said it would hire 200 people. The company was awarded a Job Development Investment Grant that would have totaled $3.7 million from 2016 through 2027 once all 200 jobs are created. It’s unclear if the move disrupts that grant process.
TTI initially leased 60,000 square feet at Innovation Park and in 2022, it leased an additional 68,000 square feet, The Charlotte Business Journal reported.
TTI officials could not immediately be reached for comment about the move Thursday.

- Sushi distributor Hissho Sushi announced its move to Rock Hill in May. The company said it would create 146 jobs and invest $5 million.
