Atrium starts work to open Concord standalone emergency unit in the summer
Atrium Health is working to open a new emergency department in Concord next summer, after breaking ground on the project Wednesday.
The freestanding emergency department will be located on John Q. Hammons Drive and will expand access to critical care for residents in Cabarrus County and northern Mecklenburg County. By providing services closer to home, the project will reduce travel time for patients in these areas, Atrium said.
The Atrium Health Concord Emergency Department will operate as an extension of Atrium Health Cabarrus, according to a news release from the company. It will offer 24/7 access to emergency medical care, six emergency rooms, and a trauma room.
The layout is designed for quick care. Some other features include a three-bay area for triage, to sort patients based on the urgency of their needs, and rapid medical exams. The facility will also offer advanced medical services such as a CT scanner, X-ray, portable ultrasound, and a lab and pharmacy for care.
Spanning over 11,000 square feet, the project is currently under construction. Atrium is using prefabricated units — large, pre-made sections—for the build.
Atrium did not provide cost estimates for the project.
