Hendrick Automotive has $13 million plans for a SouthPark property

Hendrick Automotive Group has plans for SouthPark.

The Charlotte-based company purchased vacant land for $13 million at 5954 Carnegie Blvd. Thursday, according to Mecklenburg County records. The 2.6-acre plot sits at the Capitol Towers complex, developed by Lincoln Property Co.

Lincoln envisioned the vacant SouthPark land to be a 10-story, 300,000-square-foot office tower with potential ground-floor retail space, according to Lincoln’s website. It would be the third office building at the Capitol Towers complex if developed that way.

But a Hendrick representative told The Charlotte Observer on Friday that the company has no immediate development plans for the site.

Lincoln Property officials couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Friday. Charlotte Business Journal first reported the purchase.

Hendrick’s current headquarters is at 6000 Monroe Road, about six miles east of the SouthPark site. It’s unclear whether Hendrick will continue with that plan or building another type of office space.

Capitol Towers North and South were built in 2017 and 2015, respectively. The buildings there host Legion Brewing SouthPark, Rhino Market & Deli SouthPark.

Those buildings are also owned by Highwoods Properties, which has a longstanding relationship with Lincoln Property. The Raleigh-based real estate investment firm recently purchased Legacy Union 6Hundred at 600 S. Tryon St. in late November. It’s the fourth property Highwoods has purchased at the Legacy Union redevelopment since 2019, spending almost $1 billion at the site.
