Wells Fargo adding solar power at its big north Charlotte campus. What we know

Wells Fargo is adding solar power at its customer information center in Charlotte.

The San Francisco-based bank submitted a plan to install “photovoltaic solar power carport” and solar panels on the existing parking lot and building rooftops at 1525 W. W.T. Harris Blvd., according to a Jan. 8 filing with the city of Charlotte. Photovoltaics convert sunlight directly into electricity.

Wells Fargo declined to comment while the project is developing. The plan does not include the cost of the project.

Wells Fargo has 211,000 employees companywide. Its largest employee base remains in Charlotte, with about 27,000 workers. More than 6,000 of its employees work in uptown and 10,000 work from the Customer Information Center complex in University City.

Wells Fargo has set sustainability goals for 2030 which includes to meet 100% of its annual purchased electricity needs with new renewable sources.

The bank’s plan includes adding onsite solar at six U.S. office campuses and 16 U.S. retail branch locations. Late last year, Wells Fargo opened its $570 million, 22-acre campus in Irving, Texas. The buildings incorporate solar power.

The filing comes on the heels of Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg, which launched last June. The community-based group-purchasing campaign encourages residents to go solar.

North Carolina consistently ranks in the top five states in the country for total installed solar capacity, according to Solar Energy Industries Association.
