‘Grateful to ... Charlotte.’ Why Etihad will expand CLT flights to the Middle East

Etihad Airways is extending its nonstop route from Charlotte to Abu Dhabi following a successful March 20 launch, despite ongoing war tensions in the Middle East.

The airline will increase its frequency from four weekly flights to a daily service starting June 15 through Sept. 8, Etihad announced Friday. The decision was driven by strong demand for the route, which marks the first nonstop connection from North Carolina to the Middle East.

Daily service will be offered between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport in the United Arab Emirates.

Arik De, Etihad’s chief revenue and commercial officer, said the service strengthens links between the Southeast United States and the airline’s global network.

“We are grateful to the people of Charlotte for the strong support they have shown since launch,” De stated. “Scaling to daily service so rapidly after launching is a clear signal of how quickly the route is gaining traction and the role it can play in our U.S. network.”

The expansion follows President Donald Trump’s recent three-week extension of a cease-fire with Iran. After the U.S. and Israel began military action in Iran in late February, Etihad briefly suspended flights before resuming a limited commercial schedule, alongside other Middle Eastern carriers.

Etihad and Charlotte’s first airline route to the Middle East

Etihad originally announced the Charlotte route last May, highlighting regional attractions to draw travelers to the United Arab Emirates.

Key highlights include the WB Hotel Abu Dhabi, the world’s only Warner Bros. themed hotel; Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, home to the world’s fastest roller coaster at 149 mph; and Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi, a sprawling water park.

Customers will travel on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner configured to accommodate 271 economy passengers and 32 business-class travelers. The 13- to 15-hour flight includes amenities such as Wi-Fi, live TV streaming and business-class dining on demand. Passengers can also enjoy fully lie-flat beds, private suites and pre-ordered customized meals.

Founded in 2003, the airline maintains a network spanning Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. Its U.S. destinations include New York, Washington, Boston, Atlanta and Chicago, the latter of which is also being expanded to double-daily service.

The carrier has grown rapidly, transporting 22.4 million passengers last year, a 21% increase from 2024.

Etihad concluded the year with 127 aircraft in its fleet after adding 29 jets in 2025, marking the largest one-year expansion in its history.
