Charlotte’s new Middle East route launches in March. How Etihad is prepping for it
Etihad Airways’ Middle East home base may be more than 7,000 miles and nine time zones away from Charlotte, but the airline is working hard to make its presence felt in the Queen City.
In a move that signals the growing international prominence of Charlotte, the United Arab Emirates-based airline is preparing to launch nonstop service between Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport this spring. Originally slated for May, the launch date was moved up in the fall to instead be on March 20 due to surging demand and local interest.
This is the first direct route between CLT and the Middle East, an announcement made with much fanfare last May.
And that explains the billboards you are seeing around town at places like SouthPark mall and uptown by the Mecklenburg Monument. They feature the slogan, “The fastest way to India and Asia, only with Etihad.” The ads displayed the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru — a famous landmark in India intended to highlight the carrier’s connection to major overseas hubs.
With Etihad Airways’ new route just around the corner, Regional General Manager Alpna Mathews is ready to help those flights take off. In a recent interview, Mathews detailed why Charlotte became a primary target for the airline’s aggressive “2030 Plan.”
Etihad selects Charlotte for its growing network
That 2030 strategy aims to double Etihad’s fleet and destination count, with Charlotte representing a critical piece of that equation.
“Why not Charlotte?” Mathews said. “It’s a great city ... I think there’s a lot Charlotte has to offer.”
Mathews said the city offers a diverse mix of corporations, financial institutions, universities and professional sports. However, the airline is also looking beyond the city limits.
Charlotte was also chosen for its role as a region that draws travelers from nearby hubs like Raleigh and Greensboro.
“That really opens up a lot of doors for the local community to go and explore and vice versa,” she added.
When Etihad starts flying to a new city, it works closely with the local airport to secure gates, lounges and ticket counters to provide service to passengers. The airline will have several managers and day-to-day staff for check-ins and at the gates.
Dreamliner service elevates Charlotte’s global reach
Travelers on this route will fly on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, marking the first time this advanced aircraft has been stationed at Charlotte Douglas.
The 300-seat flagship jet is designed for long-haul comfort, featuring larger windows, a quieter cabin and enhanced fuel efficiency — roughly 25% better than previous generations.
The 13-to-15-hour journey includes:
- Onboard Connectivity: Full Wi-Fi and TV streaming capabilities.
- Dine on Demand: Business class passengers enjoy fully lie-flat beds and private suites with flexible dining schedules.
- Specialized Catering: Passengers can pre-order almost any specialty meat during booking. Mathews, a vegetarian, specifically highlighted the high-quality plant-based options, such as the quinoa and beetroot cutlets served on international routes.
How Etihad’s pre-clearance transforms return to Charlotte
One of the most significant benefits for North Carolina travelers with the Etihad route is the U.S. Customs pre-clearance at Zayed International Airport, according to the airline.
Because passengers clear customs in Abu Dhabi before they board, they arrive in Charlotte as domestic travelers. This allows them to bypass long customs lines, grab their bags and head home or catch a connecting flight immediately.
Upon arrival in Abu Dhabi, passengers will experience one of the most modern aviation hubs in the world.
Mathews joked that the futuristic facial recognition technology seen in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” isn’t just movie magic—it is the actual technology used in the terminal. For those looking to explore further, the Etihad Rail high-speed train is set to launch in 2026, connecting the airport to Dubai in 30 minutes.
Etihad Airlines provides stopover experience in Abu Dhabi
Etihad is working closely with American Airlines to use Charlotte as a hub, funneling passengers from regional domestic airports onto Etihad’s international flights. This partnership ensures a transition with baggage transferred directly to the final destination.
The airline is also marketing Abu Dhabi as a world-class destination, offering a free two-night stopover program for passengers traveling to further destinations like Bangkok or India.
Some of those attractions include the WB Hotel Abu Dhabi, the only Warner Brothers-themed hotel in the world; Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, a theme park with the world’s fastest roller coaster at 149 mph; Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi, a water park with slides and attractions. Tickets are available now at etihad.com.
“There’s so much (to do),” Mathews said. “Honestly, I think you would need a week to kind of really absorb everything. I think the stopover that we provide is good taste.”
Flights are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with early morning departures from Abu Dhabi and return flights scheduled for midday.
About Etihad Airways
Founded in 2003, Etihad is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates. It serves a global network across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America—including major U.S. cities such as New York, Chicago, Washington, Boston, and Atlanta.
Etihad Airways carried 22.4 million passengers last year, an increase of 21% from 2024. By the end of last year, Etihad had 127 planes in its fleet after adding 29 new aircraft in 2025 — the biggest one-year increase in the airline’s history.
Mathews is excited about Etihad’s future at CLT and bringing something that the region hasn’t seen before.
“Our product and service will be something the community loves,” Mathews said. “Having the opportunity to see Abu Dhabi and beyond through our network will open many doors within this region.”
