Ohio bank accelerates expansion in the Carolinas with second branch in Charlotte

Huntington National Bank has begun its North Carolina expansion with two branch openings in Charlotte.

Huntington’s first Charlotte branch opened in May at 6700 Fairview Road in SouthPark.

A second branch will open at 124 E. Kingston Ave. in South End, a filing with the Office of Comptroller of the Currency shows. The branch will open in September, according to Huntington.

The branch openings are part of the Columbus, Ohio-based bank’s Carolina expansion announced last year. The plan includes adding about 55 retail branches starting with Charlotte, Raleigh and Winston-Salem in North Carolina, and Charleston, Columbia and Greenville in South Carolina, Huntington said.

The full-service branches include wealth management and comprehensive financial services, according to Huntington.

Charlotte Business Journal first reported about the second branch’s location.

Bank of America, Truist and Wells Fargo dominate the local bank market in Charlotte. Bank of America and Truist are headquartered in Charlotte, and the city is the largest employment hub for San Francisco-based Wells Fargo.

Other banks also are adding branches, including New York-based Chase Bank plans to open 100 branches across the Carolinas by the end of this year. The number includes several in the Charlotte region.

Huntington National Bank’s Carolina expansion

Huntington has accelerated its original plan from five years to three, the bank told The Charlotte Observer on Thursday. “So we will be building branches quickly across the whole region,” spokeswoman Samantha Myers told the Observer.

Three more branch openings are planned in Raleigh at 4000 Center At North Hills, and Winston-Salem at 751 W. 4th St. and 594 S. Stratford Road, OCC filings show.

Huntington will also open branches in South Carolina in Greenville, Spartanburg and Charleston, OCC filings show.

The bank has not disclosed how much it plans to invest in Charlotte but has said it’s part of a multimillion-dollar, long-term growth strategy. It will also create about 350 jobs.

The expansion builds on Huntington’s opening of its regional headquarters in Charlotte in 2023 with about 40 finance employees at One South at 101 S. Tryon St. in uptown. Huntington has over 200 employees in the Carolinas, according to the bank.

Founded in 1866, Huntington operates 968 branches in 13 states. Huntington Bancshares Inc. is a $210 billion asset regional bank holding company.
