Here are 6 facts about uptown’s newest tower, a $170 million apartment project
Uptown’s skyline is set to change again, this time with a new apartment tower along East 7th Street.
The project is being led by VeLa Development Partners, a national developer with offices in New York and Miami.
The project made headlines in April when the Levine Museum of the New South sold its building to VeLa. The museum is now open at a much smaller site on 401 S. Tryon St. as it pivots to shrinking its collection while expanding its digital presence.
Here are some things to know about the VeLa project, according to the developer:
- VeLa Uptown will be a 32-story apartment tower with 379 units at 200 E. 7th St.
- The tower will include a mix of studios, one- and two-bedrooms, as well as three-bedroom penthouses.
- There will be about 4,000 square feet of ground-floor retail at the corner of North College and East 7th streets.
- Construction costs are about $170 million.
- Tenants will have access to more than 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenity space. That will include a club room, bar, kitchen, gym, dog spa and pool.
- Construction is expected to start in the first half of next year, and finish by late 2025.
VeLa chose the location because of nearby development as well as access to public transportation and overall walkability, the company’s principal, Nick Benjamin, said.
The nearby $600-million project
The project is across the street from the planned 7th and Tryon project.
That $600-million project is expected to bring a new office tower, apartment building, plaza and other improvements to a roughly two-square block of uptown. A renovation of the Main Library branch along with two theaters at Spirit Square will be incorporated into the 7th and Tryon project.
“It’s rare to be able to find a site that is so close to the heart of the (Central Business District) and that allows real density but that also feels as residential and comfortable as our pocket of 7th Street,” Benjamin said in a statement.
