A Charlotte antique shop will reopen next week in a new location after a $5 million investment.

Sleepy Poet Antique Mall will open Monday at 6424 South Blvd., less than three miles away from its lease spaced at 4450 South Blvd. The latter mall location will close Saturday.

The mall, which opened over two decades ago, has hundreds of vendors selling antiques, collectibles and vintage items.

It will take time for the vendors to move all of their merchandise to the new venue, so the grand opening is Nov. 19, the mall said on Facebook.

Owner Dickson Shreffler purchased the 48,000-square-foot industrial building on 6 acres for $4.5 million, the Observer previously reported. He spent about $500,000 renovating the mid-century building, reusing about 70% of the building and materials.

Shreffler had hoped to open the new site with room for about 300 vendor spaces over Labor Day weekend. However, it took longer to get things done than he’d anticipated. “It turned out beautifully,” he said.

What to expect

The new location, although smaller than the other store, has a larger sales floor and is more organized, Shreffler said. It’s well lit with wider aisles and a clearly marked checkout area, too.

The new store also will open with a separate record vinyl store called Poet’s Vault. Shreffler’s son, Joshua, will run the record store and son Jason will manage the mall.

The new space includes parking, and will have room for small festivals, food trucks and live music.

Poet’s second location on West Main Avenue in Gastonia closed in May after opening five years ago after Shreffler sold the Kress building. Compleat KiDZ, a child development center, now occupies the historical building, the Gaston Gazette reported.
