A popular local coffee shop and national brunch restaurant are expanding again in south Charlotte.

Summit Coffee and First Watch will open on the west side of the Ballantyne campus, developer Northwood Office said Thursday. It’s all part of a larger redevelopment project called “Ballantyne Reimagined.”

Another tenant will be Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, anchoring a mixed-use center with 14,000 square feet of indoor space and 7,000 square feet in patio dining, The Charlotte Observer previously reported. It’s expected to open early next year.

This month, Pittsburgh-based steak and seafood chain Walnut Grill opened in the area at 15719 Brixham Hill Ave. near Staybridge Suites Ballantyne, the Observer reported.

More about the new businesses

Summit Coffee expects to open in July across from Ballantyne Hotel between Chase Bank and Bank of America.

The 800-square-foot space shop will roast blends and single-origin coffees, plus offer beer, wine and pastries and a garden patio.

“We chose Ballantyne because we are residents of Ballantyne,” Summit Coffee Franchise Owner Anthony Rossi said in a statement.

It will be the ninth Charlotte-area location, with another store planned in Cornelius, CharlotteFive previously reported.

First Watch expects to open in the fall in a shared building with Summit Coffee.

The breakfast, brunch and lunch cafe is based in Florida. It’s known for its extensive menu with banana granola crunch pancakes to turkey burgers, and seasonal dishes. The chain has 420 locations in 28 states and 9,000 employees, according to the company website. Less than two years ago, First Watch opened its eighth location in South Park.

More about Ballantyne Reimagined

At Ballantyne, Northwood owns and manages 535 acres, 4.4 million square feet of office space, four hotels with nearly 600 rooms, a 212-unit luxury apartment building and 2.5 million square feet of LEED-certified space.

In 2017, Northwood Investors bought the Ballantyne corporate park for $1.2 billion from local developer the Bissell Cos., the Observer reported. Dubbed “Ballantyne Reimagined,” the 25-acre Northwood Office LLC development between Ballantyne and Aloft hotels will create an “urban, walkable” community.

Included in the project is “Bowl at Ballantyne,” featuring more than 90,000 square feet of retail, a second apartment tower and new roads with a “main street” feel.
