Great Smoky Mountains National Park closes campgrounds, restrooms due to coronavirus
Campgrounds, picnic areas and restrooms in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be closed from March 23 through April 30 in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, the National Park Service said Sunday.
The park’s outdoor spaces, such as trails and roads, will remain open to the public, but the NPS said that could change as the coronavirus situation evolves.
“As conditions change in our nation and region, the park will continue to implement operational changes that help ensure the health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, partners, and local communities,” the NPS said in a statement.
Visitors are asked to follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as local health authorities. That includes maintaining six feet of distance from other people while out in public, including outdoors.
Parks services are limited, and visitors are encouraged to practice “Leave No Trace” principles, the NPS said.
Earlier this week, North Carolina closed state park campgrounds, restrooms and visitors centers. Trails in the state’s 34 parks, four recreation areas and three natural areas remain open to the public.
As of Sunday morning, more than 275 people had tested positive for coronavirus in North Carolina. In Mecklenburg County, that number was 77.
