New COVID-19 testing at Charlotte Motor Speedway to turn results in about a day, Atrium says

Charlotte Motor Speedway and Atrium Health have teamed up to open a coronavirus testing center at the Concord racetrack.

The drive-thru testing center, which opened in full capacity this week at the zMAX Dragway, is one of several Atrium Health testing sites, according to the hospital system.

There are no walk-in tests available. People seeking testing must speak to a doctor first, according to Atrium. Health care providers must screen patients for COVID-19 symptoms before setting up appointments at one of Atrium’s remote testing centers, if needed.

Symptoms of COVID-19, the illness caused by the new strain of coronavirus, include coughing, fever and shortness of breath.

Atrium is able to test about 1,000 samples a day, and is one of the only local medical providers with in-house testing capabilities. That means patients get test results back in about 24 hours, Atrium said in a statement.

Novant Health and Tryon Medical Partners, which both have remote COVID-19 testing locations, send samples to N.C.-based LabCorp for testing.

Atrium Health offers an online COVID-19 assessment tool, a health hotline at 704-468-8888, virtual visits with video chat, and eVisits online.

As of Tuesday morning, there were 127 reported cases of COVID-19 in Mecklenburg County. Mecklenburg has the highest number of cases in North Carolina.
