Westbound Independence Boulevard reopened shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday between Windsor Square Drive and Sam Newell Road after a spill from a concrete truck, Matthews police said.

The spill happened shortly after 5 a.m. The stretch of Independence remained closed as firefighters hosed down the concrete to remove it from the road. Two snow plows from the state Department of Transportation later joined the effort.

Traffic was detoured onto N.C. 51, Matthews police Officer Tim Aycock said.
