Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say the city’s latest homicide was a man found early Tuesday morning, sitting dead in a vehicle during the wind and rain associated with Tropical Storm Irma.

It happened in northwest Charlotte in the 1400 block of Rosetta Street, not far from the Northwest School of the Arts. It was Charlotte’s 64th homicide of the year.

The victim was identified as Derrick Lee Banner, 26. It’s at least the fourth time this year that Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have investigated a homicide that happened while someone was sitting in a vehicle.

Detectives say they were called about 3 a.m. Tuesday about an assault. On arrival, they found a man inside of a vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide Detectives were canvassing the area early Tuesday to determine whether there were witnesses.
