2 teens charged with murder of another teen in north Charlotte neighborhood, cops say

Police arrested two 19-year-olds in the killing of another 19-year-old who was found dead in a vehicle early Thursday in a neighborhood north of uptown Charlotte.

David Wayne Burns died around 12:30 a.m. in the 700 block of Holland Avenue, a dead-end street near the intersection of Atando and Statesville avenues in the Druid Hills neighborhood. He had been shot, police said.

“Two other male victims were located nearby with gunshot wounds and both were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release “... At this time, the relationship between the victims is unknown.”

Friday night, police announced the arrests of 18-year-old William Avoki and a 17-year-old female. Both were charged Friday with murder.

Avoki also was charged with two counts each of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury and discharging a firearm into occupied property causing serious injury, and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police are not saying if they know a motive behind the shooting.

Burns was the third homicide victim in four days in Druid Hills.

Sunday morning, two 35-year-old victims — Siojvon Joseph and Asa Shannon — were found dead in a car. The vehicle was reported to police after a passerby noticed it down an embankment off Atando Avenue, police said.

Police have not said how long Joseph and Shannon were in the car before it was discovered or whether the car wrecked before they were shot. As of Friday night, no arrests had been made in the case.

Anyone with information about the shooting Thursday or the previous two homicides are asked to call CMPD at 704-432-8477 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
