Here’s what Charlotte drivers can expect as President Trump’s motorcade circles uptown
Charlotte drivers can expect road blocks, detours and traffic jams much of Friday afternoon while President Donald Trump visits Charlotte to promote one his economic development programs.
The Secret Service didn’t release a specific route. But streets and interstates around Charlotte Douglas Airport International Airport and the nearby National Guard Armory are likely to feel the biggest impact.
Trump’s destination is the Dale F. Halton Theater at Central Piedmont Community College, just outside the Interstate 277 loop.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say drivers headed to the area should count on delays between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to a release.
“Plan ahead and use routes to avoid these area if at all possible,” the release said. “Traffic around the event site will be closed for most of the morning and early afternoon.”
Alternative routes to the east include US. 74 for people exiting uptown, or Interstate 485 for people who want to avoid the center city entirely.
Trump is scheduled to speak at 1 p.m. at an “opportunity now” summit which is not open to the public. The half-day affair includes seminars on “inmate re-entry into society, economic development for low-income areas, infrastructure and the future of historically black colleges and universities,” the Charlotte Observer reported earlier this week.
Speakers will include Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and Small Business Administration Administrator Jovita Carranza.
