Temperatures cool below freezing overnight in Charlotte. The roads may be icy in spots

After most of the Charlotte area saw rain change to snow during the afternoon and evening hours Thursday, that part of the storm system quickly wound down late in the evening and through the overnight hours.

However, as subfreezing air rolled in behind this snow, the leftover water on the roadways may freeze in spots creating hazardous driving conditions early Friday.

Friday morning low temperatures will bottom out in the upper 20s and we likely won’t get back above freezing until 9 or 10 a.m.

A number of accidents on the roads have already been reported.

Sunshine will return for the balance of the day and that will carry on through the weekend pushing temperatures back into the 50s as well.

Next chance of rain, and it’s a good one, heads back our way on Monday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed for students Friday.

School-based staff and central office employees should report at 10 a.m. or use the day as an annual leave day.

Other local school districts have started to announce delays and closings due to conditions from Thursday’s winter weather.

Avery County Schools, Cabarrus County Schools, Rowan-Salisbury Schools, Stanly County Schools and Anson County Schools will be closed Friday.

Lincoln County Schools, Alexander County Schools, Hickory Public Schools, Catawba County Schools, Caldwell County Schools, Cleveland County Schools, Iredell-Statesville Schools, Newton Conover City Schools and Lancaster County Schools will operate on a three-hour delay Friday.

Rock Hill Schools, Fort Mill Schools, Gaston County Schools, Chesterfield County Schools and Clover School District will operate on a two-hour delay for students and staff Friday.
