Two homicides reported in East Charlotte, police say

Police are investigating two homicides in east Charlotte, capping off another deadly weekend as city officials grapple with rising violent crime.

A woman was fatally shot in the 300 block of West 28th Street on Saturday night, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release. Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene, after officers had arrived around 10:40 p.m.

And early Sunday morning, police say a 23-year-old man was fatally stabbed in the 6300 block of Montego Drive in a domestic-related incident.

Officers arrived at the scene about 4 a.m., where paramedics later pronounced Jaquis Lowery dead. CMPD said 21-year-old Chakyra Robinson of Charlotte was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the CMPD homicide unit at 704-432-8477 or, to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Charlotte has recorded almost 70 homicides this year. In the first half of 2020, more than 80% of the city’s homicide victims died from gunfire, according to an Observer analysis.

A 35-year-old Charlotte man was fatally shot at an arcade Friday night, in the 4000 block of Wilkinson Boulevard, the Observer previously reported. Police on Saturday announced the arrest of 49-year-old Akinto Maurice Boone of Charlotte on a first-degree murder charge in Durrell Coleon Fuller’s death.
