1 dead after an assault in Charlotte on Saturday as homicides mount, police say
A man died after suffering “life-threatening trauma” during an altercation in the common area of a northeast Charlotte apartment complex on Saturday, police said.
Late Saturday, police identified the victim as 35-year-old Billy Clay McKay Jr.
McKay knew the person whom police suspect of killing him, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release Saturday night.
On Sunday, police charged 31-year-old Jonathan Andre Ramsey with McKay’s murder.
McKay was the city’s 79th homicide victim of the year. At this time last year — one of the worst years for murders in a decade — Charlotte had 68 homicides, according to police.
Police said McKay died soon after Medic took him to a hospital, police said. Police were still looking for the suspect Saturday night.
About 3:40 p.m., University City Division officers found the victim after responding to reports of an assault near the 10200 block of Pintail Place.
Police described their investigation as “active and ongoing.”
The homicide was the second in two days.
On Friday, 20-year-old Zion Garcia died after being shot at an East Charlotte apartment complex. Garcia was found by officers in a parking lot two miles away, according to police.
