Shots fired at uptown Charlotte light rail stop. 1 critically hurt, CMPD says
A person was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a shooting at a light rail stop in uptown Charlotte Thursday morning.
The victim was shot at about 11:45 a.m. in the 200 block of East Trade Street, and Medic took the victim to a hospital, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.
Two Observer journalists were working in the area at the time shots were fired.
The light rail platform was sparsely-populated at the time of the shooting. The stop is beside the EpiCentre dining and entertainment complex.
One Observer journalist said he saw people fighting on the opposite platform when he looked though the windows of a stopped train. Shots soon rang out.
It’s unclear whether an arrest has been made. In a statement, CMPD officials said detectives “are not actively looking for any additional suspects at this time.”
CMPD called the investigation “active and ongoing” and asked anyone with information to call police at 704-432-8477 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
Less than one year ago, another shooting in the same part of uptown took the life of a CEO who was walking to a business meeting.
In October 2019, John Waldron Holaday, 74, of Bethesda, Md., was shot as he stood near North College Street, the Observer reported at the time. He was the founder and CEO of Sanford-based DisposeRx.
