Independence Boulevard reopens after fatal crash involving 7 vehicles

One person has died and three others suffered serious injuries in a multi-vehicle crash on Independence Boulevard in Matthews on Thursday, authorities said.

The wreck happened around 2 p.m., on westbound Independence at Interstate 485, and forced the road to be closed, the Matthews Police Department said in a news release.

Independence Boulevard reopened around 5 p.m., police said.

A preliminary investigation suggests seven vehicles were involved, police said.

Medic said three patients were taken to Presbyterian Hospital and Carolinas Medical Center.
